ArduiNo Mercury

Innovation Description

This project will build a low-cost way to detect mercury from artisanal mining in rivers that can be deployed over vast areas and that can automatically alert advocates with the GPS coordinates of where and when illegal mining is occurring so that remedial action can take place.

Reason for Applying

“Earlier this year, my dad died in Costa Rica where he and my mother met and married.  He helped save a few tree nurseries in Costa Rica that, over time, grew millions of trees for planting across Central America.  He taught me that novel approaches are sometimes needed to promote ecosystem health.  I entered this contest, using his perspective, to explore how new approaches can help restore and protect the environment we depend on. “
